Condolences to the family and friends of Olympic, world and European basketball champion Ivan Edeshko

Vladimir Putin extended his condolences to the family and friends of basketball player Ivan Edeshko.

The message reads, in part:

“Ivan Edeshko, a legendary basketball player, coach and teacher, has passed away.

Ivan Edeshko devoted his remarkable talent to sport. He represented our country with distinction at the world’s most prestigious international competitions and the Olympic Games, won dozens of awards, and earned the respect and admiration of his colleagues and countless fans. He also generously shared his experience and knowledge with young players, was actively involved in public life, and helped train new generations of outstanding athletes and coaches.”

Ivan Edeshko passed away on July 30, 2026, at the age of 81.

A member of the Soviet national team, Ivan Edeshko won the Olympic gold medal in 1972 and the Olympic bronze medal in 1976. He was also a world champion (1974), a World Championship silver medallist (1978), a two-time European champion (1971 and 1979), a European Championship silver medallist (1975), and a European Championship bronze medallist (1973).
