Vladimir Putin held a working meeting with St Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov.
Alexander Beglov thanked the President for officially designating August 9 – the day marking the end of the Battle of Leningrad – as a Day of Military Glory in Russia. The battle lasted from July 10, 1941, to August 9, 1944. The Governor also highlighted a series of events planned in honour of the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War, including the restoration of monuments, exhibitions, theatre festivals, scientific conferences, and symposiums. Key commemorative events include the 30th Congress of the International Association of Public Organisations of Leningrad Siege Survivors on May 6, attended by delegates from various countries; the Victory Ball on Palace Square on May 7; a ceremonial laying of flowers and wreaths at Piskaryovskoye Cemetery on May 8; and a military parade on May 9.
The Governor provided an update on major infrastructure projects underway in St Petersburg and the Leningrad Region, including the development of a latitudinal high-speed motorway, the construction of a new drawbridge across the Neva River, and the introduction of a high-speed tram line serving newly built residential areas.
He also addressed support measures for participants in the special military operation. Comprehensive care is being offered, including access to medical treatment, psychological support for both the servicemen and their families, as well as opportunities for professional retraining and employment.
Regarding the economy, Alexander Beglov noted that the city is demonstrating strong performance, with investment growth reaching 10.5 percent. In the past year alone, 1.529 trillion rubles were invested in production. Small and medium-sized enterprises are playing an active role in the development of industrial sectors, and IT companies are showing steady progress. The unemployment rate currently stands at just 1.5 percent, and average salaries in St Petersburg exceed the national average.
Alexander Beglov emphasised that all of the President’s instructions are being implemented, despite existing challenges. Efforts are ongoing to address and resolve these issues. He also conveyed the gratitude of veterans and Leningrad siege survivors to President Vladimir Putin, along with their congratulations ahead of the upcoming holiday.
