Greetings on the 50th anniversary of Novy Urengoi

September 6, 2025

Vladimir Putin congratulated Governor of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Area Dmitry Artyukhov and residents of Novy Orengoi on the city’s 50th anniversary.

The message reads, in part:

“A new wonderful city emerged on our country’s map in 1975. Thanks to the selfless hard work of geologists, construction teams, surveyors, engineers, and other workers, extremely challenging tasks were solved in the circumpolar region, including the launch of gas production at one of the world’s largest gas fields, the construction of housing, schools and kindergartens, healthcare facilities, cultural and sports centres, industrial and transport infrastructure.

It makes me glad to see that Novy Urengoi is an authentic city with an especially strong character that is open to bold ideas and initiatives, with ambitions to become a truly comfortable and appealing city, a beloved home to young people, and people of all ages and walks of life. Its residents carefully preserve and multiply the creative and productive traditions of the city’s pioneers, contributing heavily to the development of the fuel and energy sector and the Russian economy in general. Of course, it is important to note that people in the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Area sincerely care about preserving the region’s unique nature, the lifestyle and centuries-old customs of the low-numbered indigenous peoples of the Russian North and Siberia. They also have large-scale plans to develop prospective deposits and new logistics routes.

I want to stress once again that the Arctic is Russia’s strategic region that will remain our priority.”
